What Are DTF Transfers? A Beginner’s Guide to Direct-to-Film Printing

DTF transfers make it possible to create vibrant, full-color apparel without owning a DTF printer. In this beginner-friendly guide, I’ll explain what DTF transfers are, how they work, what you need to apply them, and why they’ve become such a popular option for custom apparel and small T-shirt businesses.

What Is a DTF Transfer?

DTF stands for Direct-to-Film. A DTF transfer is a full-color design that is printed onto a special film, backed with white ink, coated with adhesive powder and cured so it’s ready to be applied to fabric with a heat press.

Unlike vinyl, the design is printed rather than cut and layered. That means DTF can reproduce detailed artwork, gradients, small lettering and vibrant colors in a single transfer.

One of the biggest advantages is that you don’t need to own a DTF printer to use DTF transfers. You can order ready-to-press transfers and apply them yourself, making DTF a practical option for individuals, small businesses and anyone getting started with custom apparel.

How Do DTF Transfers Work?

DTF transfers are surprisingly simple to use once they’ve been professionally printed and cured. The finished transfer arrives ready for you to apply with a heat press.

1. Prepare your garment.

Place the shirt or other compatible item on your heat press and pre-press briefly to remove moisture and wrinkles.

2. Position the transfer.

Place the DTF transfer where you want the design, with the printed side facing the garment.

3. Heat press the design.

Press using the recommended temperature, time and pressure provided with your transfers. Always follow your supplier’s instructions because application settings can vary.

4. Peel the film.

Depending on the film being used, the transfer may be hot, warm or cold peel. Follow the instructions provided with your transfer.

5. Finish with a final press.

A short finishing press helps set the transfer and gives the design its finished appearance.

What can DTF transfers be used on?

DTF works on many popular fabrics and garment colors, including cotton, polyester and cotton/poly blends. Because white ink is printed underneath the design, vibrant artwork can also be applied to dark garments.

Do you need a DTF printer?

No. This is one of the reasons DTF has become so useful for people starting a custom apparel business. You can purchase professionally printed, ready-to-press transfers and focus on creating and selling shirts without investing in a DTF printer, inks, film, powder, RIP software and ongoing printer maintenance.

A few beginner tips

Always follow the pressing instructions that come with your transfers. Use a heat press rather than guessing with temperature and pressure, make sure the garment is flat before pressing, and avoid seams, collars or other raised areas that can prevent even pressure.

Starting with quality transfers and learning a consistent pressing process can save a lot of frustration while you're getting comfortable with DTF.
